Setting up your Monitors

To change the output mode

There are 4 basic modes that Windows can operate in when you have more than one display connected. In addition you can choose which way round windows thinks your monitors are arranged as well as setting your Primary Monitor

  • PC Screen Only - Disable your secondary monitor
  • Duplicate - The same thing on both monitors
  • Extend - Different pictures on each monitor (Recommended Option)
  • Second screen only - Only use the secondary monitor

Step 1 - Press Windows key + P.  This will open a menu as shown below.

Step 2 - Click on the option you want to use. In most cases we recommend using Extend

Make sure your monitors are the correct way around

Once you are in extend mode, you need to make sure windows knows which way round your monitors are arranged.  This makes sure that when your mouse cursor leaves the side of one monitor, it moves correctly to the next one.

Step 1 - Right Click on your desktop and choose Display Settings

Step 2 - Click on the identify button

Step 3 - You should see some large numbers show up on top of your screens as show below.  Make sure that the numbers in the settings are the same way around as your monitors

Step 4 - If the numbers are the wrong way round, click and drag the screens the correct way around then click Apply

Choose your Primary Monitor

This will tell windows which screen you want applications to launch on by default.

Step 1 - Open the display settings as above

Step 2 - Click on the monitor you want to be your primary screen

Step 3 - Scroll down and tick the box Make this my Main display
