Practical Science @Home – How to Join Our Team

Badminton School’s Science Outreach team is really looking forward to working with you in our Practical Science @Home Workshop!

A schedule for the day should have already been emailed to you when you signed up for the taster day.

Please make sure that you have collected any materials that you need for the workshop; these are detailed on the second page of the Taster Session Schedule

Prior to the session, please can you visit https://repl.it and signup for a free account.

On the Day

In the morning you will be added to the main team for the day "Project Eucalypus".  Please open Teams and familiarise yourself with the Team.

The morning sessions will take place in two channels within Project Eucalyptus.

Please join the Welcome Meeting using either method by 9:45 am. If you can arrive a little bit earlier, we will be available to show you around and help you navigate the site from 9.35am onwards.

As well as welcoming you to the session, we will organise you into common rooms during the Welcome Meeting and spend a little time orientating around the project eucalyptus site.

After the welcome meeting, our guests will move to their common room. Links for both common rooms are above and similar to the welcome meeting, the common room meetings can be accessed from the channel Posts tab as well.

It can be difficult to feel engaged with online sessions and our Common Rooms are designed to promote interaction between visitors and the Outreach team, helping build a friendly atmosphere and make people feel more involved in the session. Team members will start conversations using a set of icebreaker questions; please encourage your daughter to participate!

During the morning, your daughter will participate in a variety of activities in ‘Classroom – Main’ channel, as well two sessions in her common room; the first one mentioned above and a second one for the slushy activity at 10:35 am.

Each activity session will be delivered live during the meeting running in the ‘Classroom – Main’ channel by members of the science outreach team and is supported by instructions in the appropriate classroom. If you would find it helpful to access these instructions, you may find it easier to use these links as they should open in a web browser:

If you do access instructions via a classroom channel, depending upon your device, you may end up leaving the ‘Classroom – Main’ meeting as not all devices support simultaneously meeting and accessing channels content.

If you have access to a second device for instructions this could be helpful so you’re able to remain in the meeting and benefit from guidance from our team. Meetings can be re-joined either from the direct link or from the channel’s posts tab meeting link.

There are results forms for each of the activities, which can be accessed from within classrooms or as per the instructions, from direct web links below:

If anyone becomes lost during the workshop, please either type a message to @dwilliams from any channel’s Posts tab or post a message in the General channel’s posts tab which will be monitored all morning.

Our thing session will bring things together with a talk on Solids, Liquids and Gases given by Science Outreach team members, which we hope you will find exciting! The team explore these states of matter using some unusual demonstrations that occasionally involve socks…
