Year 9 Scholarships

Listed below are the scholarships and awards that are offered for entry into Year 9 at Badminton School for September 2025. Applications are open to both  external candidates who have completed the registration form (on the website) and current Badminton Year 8 girls.

All candidates must sit the required assessments below as needed, plus the relevant scholarship assessments and have an interview with a member of the Senior Leadership Team. The scholarship application must be received at Badminton School by Wednesday 30 October 2024 along with the online registration (external candidates only), Badminton School students must submit the scholarship application by Tuesday 19 November.

Entrance assessment papers and interviews for entry in September 2025 will be held at Badminton on Saturday 16 November.

Academic Scholarship assessments for Badminton students will be held on Monday 25 November, and Assessments in Art, Drama, Music, and Sport will be arranged once applications are confirmed.

Candidates may apply for only one scholarship or award unless applying for an Academic Scholarship when we will accept a second application in another category, only one will be awarded.

Academic Scholarship

The Academic Scholarship is aimed at pupils who show a genuine interest in the academic side of School life and are prepared to be an academic role model to other pupils. 

Candidates are required to take the following assessments:

  • Humanities Paper
  • Science Paper
  • Interview with a member of the Senior Leadership Team.

Art Scholarship

The Art Scholarship will be offered to girls with a talent in the creative arts and will be expected to make a significant contribution to the life of the Art Department.

Candidates are required to take the following assessments:

  • Art Practical Assessment
  • Present a Portfolio of their Art
  • Interview with the Head of Art 

For overseas candidates, the interview and assessment can be conducted on line.  Portfolios can also be sent electronically.

Music Scholarship

The Music Scholarship is for pupils who are passionate about the importance of Music and work to ensure it plays a key role in the life of the School. Candidates are expected to have achieved at least Grade 6 standard in their first instrument. Candidates who may not be Grade 6 in their first instrument, who can give evidence of exceptional commitment and musical potential , are also encouraged to apply.

Candidates are required to do the following:

  • Give a music audition in two instruments or one instrument plus voice. The audition should consist of two contrasting pieces on your first instrument/voice, and one piece on any other instrument / voice. Candidates should state which pieces of music they will be performing on the application form.
  • Interview with the Director of Music  - this will be part of the audition process

Drama Scholarship

Drama Scholars will be creative, dynamic and confident individuals, knowledgeable about Drama and able to lead, and be led, by others. A Drama Scholar will have a passion for theatre and performance. They will have a strong interest in performing and will be expected to take part in the School productions. Scholars will also show an interest in watching theatre productions and take part in theatre trips where appropriate. Scholars should show keen interest in becoming fully involved in the life of the Drama Department.

Candidates are required to take the following assessments:

  • Perform two contrasting monologues, both from published plays of the candidates choice, one of which should be from a Shakespearean play. The pieces will need to demonstrate a difference in characters or theatre styles.  Each monologue should last no longer than two minutes and should be performed off-book with a copy provided for the audition.
  • An interview with the Head of Drama about the candidate's Drama experience.

Sport Scholarship

Badminton values sport as an important part of its holistic education and is keen to encourage those with specific interest and skill in this field. Candidates will demonstrate a high level of performance in their chosen sport or multitude of sports, with potential to excel/progress within the National Governing Body’s framework of player development.

Candidates are required to take the following assessments:

  • Sport assessment of skills including core physical abilities (e.g. strength, speed, power, agility), as well as generic and sports specific skills (through drills and small sided games). 
  • Interview with the Director of Sport 
  • Report(s) on the ability and attitude of the candidate from the candidate’s current PE teachers and/or coaches
