Chinese New Year and Eastgate
This week was filled with many celebrations at Sanderson House. On Saturday we celebrated Bernice’s Sweet 16th! Her and some girls went to the movies and had a pizza night while watching a classic film, 13 Going on 30! A group of girls cooked up a storm on Saturday and Sunday evening for the New Year with a mixture of traditional Chinese dishes including beef and tomato, fried rice, tiger prawns, gyozas and so much more. The girls celebrated the Chinese New Year by taking a trip to the local Chinese supermarket, where they all came back with boxes of goodies to get them through the chilly winter. “We had lots of fun. I bought food and shared it with my friends,” Evie (Yr. 9).
Some of the girls enjoyed going out to their boundaries to go shopping, some had sleepovers, and other girls went out with their guardians to celebrate the new year. Sasha (Yr. 11) recited her poem in Chinese for some of the staff, “I only started learning Chinese this year because I wanted to learn another challenging language” she explained.
We rounded off the weekend by handing out red envelopes to all the girls, another Chinese New Year tradition. Miss Clarke was surprised with a chocolate cake to celebrate her birthday which was earlier on in the week.
