Control who can post messages or start conversations

For some large teams it is useful to control who can post new messages.  This keeps the conversation area clean and on topic.  This is also very useful if you have a chatty class who are easily distracted.

The ability to post messages is a per channel setting.  You can access the settings using the steps below.

Step 1 - Click on the ellipsis (three dots) next to the channel you wish to edit.

Step 2 - Click on Manage Channel

Step 3 - Choose your preference from the list:

  • Anyone can post messages
  • Anyone can post; show alert that posting will notify everyone (recommended for large teams)
  • Only owners can post messages

Unfortunately you cannot yet mute the chat window of a meeting.  Microsoft are aware of this and hope to bring this functionality to teams soon
